    The Woman in Gold

This movie held me from the opening scene until the credits rolled - quite an achievement for a film where everyone knows how it ends. The depth of the story of the Nazi's march through Austria and their savage looting of Jewish family homes was intense. It was powerful to hear the audience as a whole gasp at the scenes. Helen Mirren does her usual magic in bringing a real person to life on the screen. It was a pleasant surprise to see Ryan Reynolds actually turning in a strong performance where he isn't goofing off or mugging for the camera. Watching his transformation as his character is drawn into Maria's story is genuine. Katie Holmes is a bit wooden as his wife, but she looks the part perfectly. A nice surprise to see Jonathan Pryce as Supreme Court Judge Rehnquist and Elizabeth McGovern as a judge as well. This film is a must see for younger generations who can never comprehend the horror of Hitler's march. The horror of the Holocaust must never be diluted by the passage of time.
