Truth is a solid expose into the controversy that erupted when CBS decided to run a story about President George W. Bush and his Air National Guard service, and the subsequent corporate/White House pressure that led to the ousting of legendary journalist Dan Rather from his anchor's chair. Robert Redford takes on the role of the iconic newsman and is quite moving, particularly in his farewell address to the nation. Yet this film isn't really about Rather, but about his producer Mary Mapes, brilliantly played by Cate Blanchett, who took the brunt of the criticism behind the scenes. It may not be up to the technical standard of classic journalism films like Redford's All the President's Men, but certainly encapsulates its spirit, and details in a consistently compelling manner, what was essentially the death of hard hitting, investigative journalism in favor of corporate profits.
