War Dogs

I don't see war movies, and I wouldn't have seen this one either, except that I'll watch anything with Jonah Hill. And let me tell you, the man was mesmerizing. He totally inhabited his role and had me engaged in every moment. The script was very well done: imagine being in sympathy with a sociopath: with gun runners. The superb directing encouraged every ounce of nuance from the actors, including those in interesting supporting roles (nice casting, by the way, though it would be more fascinating if non-models were to get the girlfriend role sometimes...) The relationship between the Hill and Teller, the two leads, had the feel of Penn and Hutton in The Falcon and the Snowman, and was every bit as rivetting. The action flowed in a way that was neither overwhelming, contrived or traumatic. I'm so satisfied when I venture out of my comfort zone and am rewarded by such a unexpectedly compelling piece of work.
