    A Clockwork Orange

Stanley Kubricks intensely intelligent sci-fi drama of a futuristic society is a 1971 film that wallops a big punch even in 2015. That's the power of Kubrick and this masterpiece. An extremely repressive state has done its utmost in turning its citizens into nothing more than a collection of almost robotic characters, seemingly unable to think or act on their own powers. It's a very violent film with teenage gangs in open society out to cause havoc at every turn. How prophetic was all this as youth gangs have become such an enormous menace in our day and age. It's almost superfluous to state that Malcolm McDowell gives a gargantuan, brilliant, frightening Oscar Nominated performance in ORANGE! The costume designs for Clockwork were inspirational contributing greatly to this looming society of the future. What makes the film even creepier and scarier is that Kubrick uses very light, delightful music from Gioacchino Rossini's La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie) such bright, colourful, infectious music whenever horrific things are happening. The juxtaposition of the two side by side is something one would never expect. Kubrick refused to use music of a dark, macabre nature. He proved brilliant in the melodies he chose adding greatly to what he wanted to capture on film. The director was basically saying that as violence occurred, it was nothing but frivolity for the hoodlums. The film was a tremendous success back in the day and garnered numerous nominations for Oscars taking home none. The nominations themselves were the award. No Academy member was going to vote for this pretty outrageous film of 1971. It was a shocker for many, especially middle aged folk to older ones.
