    A Man for All Seasons

This Oscar winning film from 1966, directed by the multi-Oscar nominated Fred Zinnemann is easily one of the greatest films of the 60's written by Oscar Winner Robert Bolt. It all deals with the promotion of Sir Thomas More, later Saint Thomas Moore who would nor bend to the wishes of Henry Viii who insisted that More recognize the break with Catholicism and his choice of several wives. It becomes a battle of wills... and guess who wins? Practically everybody in the cast was nominated for an Oscar with Paul Schofield beating out Richard Burton for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe." The film really becomes a thriller of sorts as mercurial Henry Viii's reasoning and demands on Thomas More and his family made the entire situation a very untenable one. A FILM THAT MUST BE SEEN BY by anyone calling himself/herself a cinéphile. It's total perfection from every viewpoint. Robert Shaw as Henry and Orson Welles as Cardinal Wolsey, his main minister and liaison with the Pope are at logger heads most of the time. Henry was irascible and it was no time to disagree with him on the smallest of issues. All of the big names of his court were eventually beheaded. MASTERFUL! MASTERFUL! MASTERFUL! The integrity of this film is staggering!
