    A Night at the Opera

Arguably, the best of all the MARX BROTHERS films," A Night at the Opera " is a hysterically funny musical comedy from way back in 1935. George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind were the insane, brilliant writers and director Sam Wood got it all down on film to perfection. By this time, only 3 brothers performed in film, ZEPPO having left after only two films. Some of the brothers ( Groucho, Chico and Harpo ) best known skits are from this feature including the hilarious stateroom skit and the fiasco in the Opera House. Thankfully MARGARET DUMONT, a patron of the Opera, is on hand as straight woman to Groucho's crude but wickedly funny remarks. To add to the festivities, soprano KITTY KARLISLE and tenor ALLAN JONES (the lovebirds) do some damn serious singing from Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece, IL TROVATORE. (The Troubador) Walter King as the hammy Italian tenor will leave you in stitches as grand opera, in general, is lambasted thoroughly. Literally every line of dialogue, every action, all the musical arias and duets contribute to one grand night of cinema. If you've never given the ZANY MARX BROS. A chance, start with this winner. The laughs are guaranteed.
