    A Pocketful of Miracles

This is Frank Capra's own remake of his very popular 1933 film LADY FOR A DAY, one of Capra's fist gigantic hits. After Capra directed A POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES in 1961, he decided to leave directing for good. There was a lot of tension on the set and he simply had had enough stating he preferred the way they made films in the old days.

There might have been some problems on the set between Miss Bette Davis (Apple Annie) and Glenn Ford (Big Duke), but that didn't, thank heaven, ruin the movie. The material is based on a Damon Runyon story, quite the character who knew all about Broadway, the high society and the low life. The cast for MIRACLES is absolutely out of this world super. Besides BETTE and Glenn, the film stars Hope Lange, Arthur O'Connell. Peter Falk (Oscar Nomination) Thomas Mitchell from (Gone with the Wind), the delightful fop Edward Everett Horton, Mickey Shaughnessy, David Brian, Sheldon Leonard, Ellen Corby, Perter Mann and introducing ANN-MARGARET as Bette's daughter. She was just turning 19 at the time. It would be impossible to gather a cast as great for a film today. The plot revolves around Times Square where high society often rubs shoulders with the riff raff. So is the case with Big Duke who thinks Apple Annie's daily apple brings him luck. From this simple premise part of Spain and all of New York is going in the festive mood for a very special occasion. You won't believe what all happens to turn a city upside down. It's an old-fashioned comedy, but it works for several reasons; the cast WAS all HOLLYWOOD GOLD Veterans and a hot new sexy chick in Miss Margaret. Between the suspense and the laughter it feels one is going to "bust a gut", pardon the language. One never knows at any given minute if the whole thing is going to come off or not and that is a great deal of the fun.

I can't obviously reveal the plot so not to spoil this mad cap caper. Let me just say that every player has a very specific role within that inner circle of Broadway Nuts and she/he must fulfill their duty to the letter of the law to have the end result. Though this is hardly contemporary humour, I never laughed so much... constantly... throughout the film. The film is light as air, delicious as a cream-puff and the conclusion will delight the hell out of you... but... wanting more! Give it a rent. You won't regret it.
