    A Soldier's Story

A Soldier's Story is based on the hit Broadway drama directed on film by the extraordinary Canadian Norman Jewison. This film truly sets a very high bench mark on many levels. As a taut thriller, murder mystery all set on an American Army Base, you won't find anything better. Director Jewison was Oscar Nominated as Best Director for his meticulous work on this film. Each frame of film adds to the suspense of this very dark drama neatly working us to fever pitch. Mr Jewison has always worked well with actors. So it is we get a superbly delineated performance from the young DENZEL WASHINGTON. Yet this is only a fraction of the overall startlingly incredible ensemble playing in this film. ADOLPH CAESAR, who won a Tony Award for playing the Sargent in the original Broadway play, reprises his role in the film which brought him an Oscar Nomination as Best Supporting Actor. It's impossible to accurately describe the utter perfection of Mr. Caesar's performance as the SARGENT, a hard, bitter, cold man. It has to be in the top 10 of greatest screen roles. Sad that Mr. Caesar passed a few years after the release of A Soldier's Story denying us other great work he might have done. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I will see this film again, no question of that!
