    A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

This semi auto-biographical film based on the novel by Betty Smith is a true treasure in every sense of the word. It's a timeless work one can enjoy time and again. The performances are so striking, so real down to the last detail! One never tires of them even after several viewings. Dorothy Maguire is perfection as the mother while film hubby James Dunn took home an Oscar for best supporting actor in 1945. Joan Blondell, in an Oscar nominated turn, is pure joy and sunshine as the children's aunt. Peggy Ann Garner was awarded an Oscar for best juvenile performance of 1945 as the young teen daughter and narrator of the film. The black and white cinematography, standard for the 1940's, works to perfection as the film depicts the hardship of family life in Brooklyn back in the early part of 20th century. Colour would have spoiled the entire ambiance. It could well be Elia Kazan's first directorial effort and it's a dandy. This slice of life classic is certainly tragic, but has some moments of joy and laughter, full of the follies, foibles and tenderness of humankind. It's a beautiful film I love and admire very much!
