Afternoon of a Faun: Tanaquil le Clercq

This bio-documentary on one of the greatest of all ballerinas with the shortest of careers touched me much like the career of the great Australian soprano Marjorie Reynolds struck down in her prime.

Tanaqyuil or Tanny as she was known to all her friends was so talented she had the two greatest choreographers of the 20th century George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins create works ONLY for her. Tanaquil's life was a tragic one as is demonstrated by the doc. A stunning woman of great beauty and height, the longest legs ballet had ever witnessed, this woman could do anything because of a slight angular twist of her body. This great lady was perhaps the most transcendental, mesmerizing prima ballerina to ever have graced a stage. It must have been a monumental event to have seen her dance. She had fame, power, love of 2 great men who considered her their Muse, the adoration of fans the world over. She certainly was the greatest dancer of her day UNTIL age 27 when polio struck severely causing paralysis. It was at the very time she was struck with the disease that the SALT vaccine came into wide use. How ironic!

The documentary GOES INTO FULL GEAR SHOWING HER LIFE, a full one after recovery, determined to be an independent woman again, so a a creature of indomitable spirit. SO WE WITNESS THE LIFE SHE LIVED TILL AGE 71 WHEN DOCTORS HAD GIVEN A PROGNOSIS OF NO MORE THAN 40 YEARS. It's all very loving and inspirational, but my question would have to be how does one get over such an enormous knock from life, down for the count at 27, never ever to dance again!?
