The Original Airport was apparently such a sensation box office wise that it earned several Oscar nominations though it is essentially junk except for the performance of Maureen Stapelton ( Oscar nominated ) though she lost to sentimental favourite Helen Hayes as the little old lady who steals aboard on flights in her crafty ways. Van Heflin, as a neurotic in maybe his last film, was superior to every male in the feature and it's criminal he did not receive an Oscar Nomination. There is so much going on in the total mayhem of the film that I can see why that 1970 crowd so gravitated to the film. THE SEQUEL AIRPORTS WERE TRULY NOTHING BUT COMMERCIAL GARBAGE WITH NOT ONE IOTA OF VALUE! The Original AIRPORT was too POPCORN a movie ( except for the 3 outstanding performances ) to give it much of a score. It was all too much with the over-sentimentalized relationships of the major stars as to put it way over the top.
