All Quiet on the Western Front

The 1930 Oscar Winning Best Film " All Quiet..." from the remarkable novel of Erich Maria Remarque stars a very young Lew Ayres and Louis Wolheim in one of the greatest war dramas ever filmed, director Lewis Milestone at his Oscar winning best! The film truly is a savage anti-war drama, grim and morbid and at 2 1/2 hours, extremely long for one of the first great " talkies." This is not a war film as we know it. It traces the steps of seven German School Boys as they head off to fight in 1914 experiencing every horror of the war. UNIVERSAL spared no expense to make this a feature one that would live in memory. Battle films are always popular as FURY with Brad Pitt in 2014. But ALL QUIET is a rare specimen. There is never a single glorification of combat throughout the film, no dashing charges by soldiers, no thrill of victory, no heroics of any kind. It has one purpose: TO SHOW THAT WAR IS GRIM FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TO FIGHT!

OF INTEREST: 'All Quiet' was banned in Germany for over 20 years (understandable) and did not get a French screening until 1963. I have never understood why it took so long to be shown in France. Easily one of the greatest war epics of world cinéma... and it's from Hollywood!

A MUST SEE OSCAR WINNING FILM!
