ALL THAT JAZZ from 1979 has been re-released in a spanking clean edition from the Criterion Collection in surround sound.
Bob Fosse's musical semi-bio drama gets into some of his very personal problems and medical conditions, all a bit strange in the form of a musical. Roy Scheider as Bob Fosse has never given a better performance. He was Oscar Nominated as Best Actor but did not win.
It is a good movie, but I found it self-indulgent a great deal of the time which put me off. Even medical procedures like heart surgery are shown in great detail. It's too visceral and therefore does not get a thumbs up from me. This should be entertainment about a Broadway producer, director. It becomes too clinical and cold. I had a hard time identifying with the havoc of his life. Bob Fosse never ever stopped in real life and died of a heart attack at the peak of his career on Broadway. However, and I repeat again, I didn't want to see such a personal account on screen. He didn't even attempt to disguise that it could be fiction or a life based on another character. Much too ego-maniacal for my taste.
