One of the great romantic dramas of a French governess in a wealthy household of mid 19th century France. The enormous sweep of the piece is quite overwhelming with Bette Davis in a controlled, beautiful performance as Henriette Desportes, the tutorial treasure. Charles Boyer is in top form and Barbara O'Neil (mother in Gone with the Wind) is masterful as a woman on the verge. The children are beautifully played, all under the direction of the great Anatole Litvak! The entire set and costume design is a wonder of what Warner Brothers could do back in the golden age of Hollywood.
