    Aloft

ALOFT will never be any kind of big hit in spite of the fact that it does have a few wonderful things going for it. Peruvian director Claudia Llosa has good intentions, but she falls into some cinématic traps that are disastrous. First off, the film can be quite striking, but it has a very uneven narrative that will immediately put people off. Miss Llosa is hardly concerned with that (but she should be) as she has a good deal to say poetically and has every intention of revealing as much of it as she deems necessary. This is not that wise on her part. Yet, ironically, with as much as she does say in her film, as intriguing as it all is, this meditative tale filled with mystical imagery never fully reveals all of its secrets, which for me is a good thing. The film can become frustratingly vague and somewhat ponderous as she ploughs on with her journey about unhappy souls on this earth. When the director tones down her sermonizing on the mystery, the mystical, the spiritual side of life and allows us to focus on the reality of the situation, matters work much better. We are foremost allowed to witness and understand Jennifer Connely's achingly beautiful performance as the mother/artist. It's a fabulously etched character. Equally dynamic, one can look at her twenty year old son and never care for him in the least as he comes off as repellent.

This story doesn't add up to much with its slender plot, but the stark natural imagery and frank discussions of spiritual longing leave an impression on a sensitive viewer. The problem with this is that most cinéma goers want action and speed in spades, not a contemplation of life. Even people my age ( mid 30's ) won't be able to sit still as the preaching goes on far too long. It's too mad director Llosa wasn't able to balance the film a bit more evenly... let her have her say, but infuse the film with more life and drama for the satisfaction of the regular joe! I would like to rate the film highly, but that would be wrong as it has too many pitfalls which will put people off!
