    Altina

Altina Schinasi ( TINA ) was born in 1907 in N.Y. City of Jewish immigrant parents, descendant of Sephardic Jews. Her father became a successful tobacco tycoon. So we have a dichotomy right from the beginning of her life, being Jewish, expected to be very much a part of a rich household right to young womanhood when she would marry, which she understood all too clearly; the other side of the coin was this incredibly bright, talented woman who was a totally free spirit, almost bohemian. WE LEARN ALL THIS WITHIN MINUTES OF THE OPENING OF THE DOCUMENTARY. What the doc does is to show this woman in all of her many incarnations and inventions, a life of total action and commitment. I don't think she was ever still in her entire life. With painting, film making, sculpture, fighting for every cause of the 20th century she was an amazing woman who was loved and cherished by all, a woman who probably never made an unkind remark of her hundred upon hundreds of friends. This doc was made by one of her grandsons and what he does best is capture the entirety of this woman whose life was one of passion and inspiration. I would say she was very much a Renaissance woman who died content knowing she had lived her life HER WAY! The fabulous thing with this doc is that there is so much archival footage of the woman herself speaking on her own behalf and the footage of so many of her peers or younger folk re-emphasizing all that we already learned from Tina herself. This was the true gift!
