I saw this film with my wife, who is a volunteer in the palliative care ward of one of the local hospitals. Her reaction: "Another day on the ward", followed by a shrug. Her reaction complimented my reaction: I found this film to be emotionally cold. For example, it (deliberately, it seems) only hinted at the day-to-day hour-by-hour drudgery of looking after a helpless stroke patient. If the film was meant to evoke sympathy for the husband who takes on the task of tending his helpless uncooperative wife, I am afraid that it failed. Also, given the ending (which I will not reveal), I am surprised that this film was not rated 18A. As a clinical demonstration of acting, Emmanuelle Riva does very well, but this film should never have been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.
