    Archipelago

I found it almost impossible to watch this British film which goes for long stretches without dialogue and only in a few instances do we get any dialogue of depth and real information. A lot of the film seems to be improvised, but of this I am not certain. Actor Tom Hiddlestone is the only name North Americans would recognize. I found the film much too quiet a portrayal of a family in emotional crisis, the emotional crisis rarely anything of devastating proportions, the family gathering in some remote home to bid farewell to one member about to leave for Africa.

Archipelago = a group of scattered islands in a large body of water.

Family Members = isolated entities within this island home with a

    minimum of communication.

The cinematography for the large chunks of indoor shooting has such a dark palette as to make even faces non-distinguishable. This ambiance makes the film even more difficult to view from an aesthetic point of view.

Everything seems muted and quiet. Even the anxieties of the various family members rarely come into any sharp focus for me. I found this film almost an exercise in futility. There is not a thing I liked about this two hour movie. I need at least some life, some sense of life and urgency to make a film work for me.
