Around the World in 80 Days

Having read the Jules Verne novel in French in High School, then being shown the 1956 or so Oscar winning film produced by Mike Todd starring David Niven and Cantinflas as his manservant became a shear joy of reading and then viewing. Todd stuck to what the characters were all about and the wild adventure which ensued in 80 days with some 40 major Hollywood stars taking on bit roles.

I like comparative literature as much as I do comparative filming. So the masterpiece from 1956 has turned into a piece of "crap" in the hands of Disney. Chan and Coogan are nothing compared to the genius casting of the above two mentioned actors, now long, long, gone. There was nothing redemptive about this horrendously pitiful film. I take exception that Disney took too much license in actually destroying the Jules Verne Classic. The film is pathetic enough that I refused to watch it after an hour or so. RENT THE ORIGINAL! You will be in Seventh Heaven!
