    Atlantic City

This essentially Canadian film with a brilliant cast from Lancaster who feels from the start that he hasn't lost his touch, to the bizarre, bed-ridden, gangster's widow, Kate Reid, who loves to read into the future, to the love interest Susan Sarandon, in an Oscar Nominated Performance, not to mention the joyous appearances of Hollis McLaren, Al Waxman, Moses Znaimer, Wallace Shawn and other Canadians... this very superior film works on every level. Let's first qualify the romantic drama to very, very HEAVY (romantic) drama, This film is not a cake-walk. With a director like Louis Malle and writer like John Guare, the actors are in terrific hands, The art and set decoration of old Atlantic City literally falling apart at the seams is brilliant. The ambiance, whether indoors or outdoors captures this dark, gritty mood perfectly. The costume design blends so zanily into the film. It was quirky, colourful, crazy and worked its sartorial splendours to create that very particular Atlantic City of 35 years ago.

The film was an enormous hit in the United States, gigantic world wide, but less impressive, strangely, in Canada. Atlantic City went on receive major Oscar nominations in the most important categories... As I study the film and delight in viewing it, it should be repeated that A. C. is a brilliant film. Burt Lancaster is in absolute top form and received many accolades for his leading role including BEST ACTOR from the prestigious N. Y. Film Critics. He went on to more awards leading to an OSCAR NOMINATION for Best Actor. Sadly, this was the year Henry Fonda was dying and so Lancaster was overlooked in favour of FONDA in " ON GOLDEN POND." As is usual, with the ACADEMY, sentimentality too often plays a great role as to who receives it... IT WAS A VERY KEEN DISAPPOINTMENT THAT Mr. BURT LANCASTER DID NOT TAKE HOME OSCAR FOR ONE OF HIS MOST BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES. Mr. Fonda was fine, but his performance could not match that of Lancaster's.
