    Beyond the Edge

There is obviously something quite grand in the accomplishment of Edmund Hillary and his partner in scaling Mount Everest, the world's highest point way back in 1953. Frankly I have no idea how it was done with gear and other equipment hardly sophisticated over 60 years ago? But they did it when all others failed. Thirteen deaths resulted from the Everest mountain attempts before Hillary. This event literally defined an era. Many were attempting this climb at roughly the same period of time. What I don't exactly get is that aside from photos being taken from the top of Everest there was absolutely no MEDIA travelling with these men, or so it appeared, no radio or transmissions to be had of any kind so how was it known for sure that they reached the top most point... simply taking it at word value? In any case it's a story of indomitable human endurance and still remains one of the greatest feats of mankind. The documentary was almost dead on perfect as I certainly had the facts of this incredible journey. In its retelling of the tale, the problem lay in that one is staring at ice and snow for the duration of the film which does not make for very exciting viewing, I suppose, except if you are into serious mountain climbing, a true mountaineer. The score is indicative of my interest in the film, not the great accomplishment of a rather ordinary man, a beekeeper, who transformed himself into one of the most extraordinary men of the 20th century.
