Birdman or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance

Although sure to be appreciated more by those intimately familiar with the inner workings of Broadway and Hollywood, Birdman should really be beloved by anyone who appreciates acting. It is truly a meta acting clinic put on by the entire cast. Michael Keaton delivers a show stopping performance ( his best work in a quarter century) as a washed up movie star still haunted by his super hero alter ego attempting to reinvent himself on the New York stage. He is matched by Edward Norton, himself delivering easily his best work since American History X as a self absorbed, wholly pretentious, yet brilliant actor. His musings on Hollywood, celebrity, artistic criticism and the NY stage are all definite highlights. The film also features the best screen work to date of Emma Stone and Zach Galifianakis, as well as strong supporting work from both Amy Ryan and Naomi Watts. The film is also brilliantly shot in long take, giving the audience that fly on the wall feeling. Although probably a little too outside the box for mainstream audiences, Birdman is a genuine triumph for director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and his entire cast. It is savagely funny, insightful and perhaps the best satire on Hollywood since The Player.
