On its surface Blue Jasmine is a straight remake of Streetcar Named Desire updated for modern sensibilities and current issues. Scratch a notch below however and you find it interwoven with strong threads of John Cassavetes and modern urban angst. This is no Blanch Dubois contrasted with everyone around her, but a full blown member of the top one percent (tenth? Hundredth of a percent? ) enjoying the delusions and fantasies of being rich, and uninterested in the origins of wealth or the subsequent human destruction it causes. Brilliant.
