I had really high hopes for Chappie. I really like Neill Blomkamp, even if Elysium was terrible, and I thought the premise had a ton of potential. The trailers were pretty good and the cast was great. Unfortunately, I hurts me to tell you that Chappie is extremely disappointing.
THE GOOD:
+ The special effects and CGI were magnificent. Chappie looked like a real robot!
+ Most of the acting was decent. Hugh Jackman, though not in the movie all that much, gave a fun performance. Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver also do good jobs. The star here is Sharlto Copley, who makes Chappie into a mostly loveable and adorable protagonist.
+ There were many good ideas in the film, even if they were barely explored.
+ There were a number of scenes that were AMAZING! Especially the ending, which I thought was pretty clever.
+ The action, musical score and cinematography were all excellent.
THE BAD:
- The thing that pissed me off most in Chappie was Ninja and Yolandi. Their acting was atrocious and their characters were so unlikeable that I rooted for them to die. I get that they aren't actors, but they made this movie a pain to watch at times.
- The story started strong, but devolved into a bunch of a-holes making the one likeable character in the whole movie into an a-hole. The plot could have gone in so many interesting places.
- The movie ripped off and coppied from so many other sci-fi flicks. Some examples are RoboCop, Big Hero 6, Short Circuit and Real Steel. I understand that some of these were just inspirations, but there were moments and characters who are just taken from those movies.
- The pace is all over the place. It's either very fast or painfully slow.
Overall, Chappie is a disappointment. Even if it had some amazing moments, great effects and cool ideas, the negatives outweigh the positives by a lot. Rent it.
