My very first Chaplin film was THE IMMIGRANT from 1918... Imagine we have THE IMMIGRANT of 2014 with Award Winner Marion Cotillard. I adore Chaplin's shorter film and have seen it at least a dozen times.
Though talking pictures had started by 1928, Chaplin would not make his first talkie till 1940's THE GREAT DICTATOR. And thank God for that. CITY LIGHTS works so beautifully as a silent film: simple, tender and honest, all in the context of his yet to be discarded " little tramp " persona. The love story makes you long for an age that is not as crude and (porno) graphic as ours. It's a film I cherish for its remarkable ability to touch the human spirit in all of us, sweet with wisps of the comedic that will ever belong to the ages. It's my 5th viewing of CITY LIGHTS, but then does one ever tire of Chaplin or CHARLOT as he is known in Europe? Do give the silent MODERN TIMES from 1934/35 a chance. You will adore it.
