    Come September

Viewing Come September, a 1961 romantic comedy with a still very virile, handsome Rock Hudson who claimed he never exercised in his life, just being born with incredible genes and the awesome, beautiful, Italian, superstar, bombshell Gina Lollobrigida brought mixed feelings as I looked at the film with a critical eye. First off I absolutely delight, almost revere these films from so long ago. They reveal so much of society's mores of the day and the strict studio system code that would do nothing to upset the apple cart as to what could be shown on screen. I marvel that a decent movie could be made with all the restrictions put on the studios by either the Hayes Office or The Legion of decency. It's wonderful yet sad to see these stars once in the glory of youth now all gone but Gina Lollobrigida. Time is a commodity that has its shining years for one and all and disappears all too fleetingly.

Well, in this caper handsome millionaire Rock returns to his villa in Italy once a year ALWAYS IN SEPTEMBER. GINA is his his long suffering girlfriend. This one particular year he comes in MAY and mayhem breaks loose, WHICH BECOMES THE ENTIRE PLOT OF THE FILM. These type comedies were enormous hits in their day, but because of societal changes which have been enormous, the film becomes dated as even fiancés weren't permitted to spend a night in the same bedroom. The sexual mores of our world are so diametrically opposed to the mores of the 1960's that it barely seems conceivable that people lived under such stringent rules, or at least they did so, out of necessity, in Hollywood movies.

If the film were remade today as a picture of modern society, filmed with the realism of contemporary mores, the film would get a breath of fresh air and be a sure fire hit. The original story is wonderful, but worry of showing anything taboo makes it look like a motion picture from the dark ages. Today, it could become another Silver Linings Playback or any more adventurous romantic comedy. With a cast like Hudson, Lollabrigida, Walter Slezak (who is marvelous) Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin, Joel Grey, the English star Brenda De Banzie and more, the film is very worth watching for some hilarious moments and as a feature from a historical perspective. I could not get over the strictness in suggesting anything in sexual terms let alone saying it outright. As for revealing anything sexually graphic, don't hold your breath. HAS SOCIETY GONE TOO FAR? BECOME TOO PERMISSIVE? I think it has, but it does not bother me in any way! Actually Cable Television has become so much more liberal in showing anything and everything on which even film puts a limit.
