    Dans la cour

Catherine Deneuve, who seems to have a new film every six months or so, seems to divide her time with good French comedies or deadly serious dramas. Her latest," In The Courtyard " is a film rather hard to navigate due to the several hard hitting themes thrown at us. Depression, dementia, disillusion are all part of in 'The Courtyard, ' a gentle if somewhat meandering study of two pretty lost, troubled souls who who form a across-generational bond. A friendship develops but it goes no where. Unfortunately, the narrative, ripe for exploration, is unable to deliver the goods. Yet Catherine Deneuve is clever enough to show the distress of a woman increasingly confused by a self she no longer recognizes. A line from the film is memorable: " When you've reached rock bottom, there is no room to judge."
