    Death and the Maiden

I originally saw Death and the Maiden on Broadway with Glenn Close for which she won a Tony Award as Best Lead Dramatic Actress. The title as some might know comes from a well known lied (art song) by Franz Schubert. I enjoyed the play though it was extremely static. I knew it would be made into a feature film but was surprised when the role didn't go to Glenn Close. It's a very "gabby" movie as important for its psychological skills in handling the plot as the plot itself, a woman out for vengeance. As with the play, the movie is almost like filmed theatre. There was a minimum of action. It's no action thriller, yet the thrills do come. Every word is of utmost importance. We come to learn of the events of the past and learn vasts amounts about the individuals all by what is SAID. One clearly has to hang on to every word. The play by Moises Kaufmann is not an altogether great play but it is serviceable. In this type film one must have actors of theatre status, extraordinary actors to pull the whole thing off. The acting is nothing short of miraculous especially in light of what I stated that the script as the original play were not of the top echelon. Sir Ben Kingsley, who was not in the original Broadway play, was a knockout. This literary type film would not be of interest to the masses in general. My score indicates that the problem with DEATH lay in the writing which had to be much sharper and better honed.
