    Deliver Us from Evil

I can understand skeptics of this genre of film eager to point out it is all nonsense as most such stories have no origins in reality whatever. I'm not a particular fan of such movies usually rating them a 1 or 2. But there is something different about this particular movie. First of all it's based on actual cases and a book by a most respectable Bronx (NYPD) policeman, an officer RALPH SARCHIE, a very hard core cop who happened to be Catholic but long since a lapsed Catholic and a severe skeptic of the Church. That this should all happen to him, on his beat makes one stop and think about this officer beyond reproach and the paranormal activity while he was on duty. One should add, I suppose, that Sarchie was not the only one exposed to this malice. The events take place in possibly a square mile of the Bronx that has long had a history of such events, a district once considered the most dangerous area in all of the U. S. But of supreme importance is that we have these really gritty South Bronx events, suspenseful, these chilling true life cases documented by the NYPD. Of course you can ignore it all. But once Evil is proven beyond any doubt, there should be some basis in trying to understand its origin.

This film though labelled a horror/thriller did not come off as that genre to me. Rarely was I horrified and the thriller aspect was no deeper than any crime scene... at least for a good portion of the film. It's not that I don't believe in bad things occurring. I certainly do. But a distinction has to be made about PRIMARY EVIL which is demonic based and SECONDARY EVIL which we as humans perpetrate on each other, the harm humans do to other humans. Through the centuries, even in the Bible there are tales of horrendous possession; the Church has documented proof of such terrors even in our day of modern psychology. The entire subject matter is difficult and complex. It's not as if I'm an advocate trying to convince others of crimes of the supernatural. I rarely even think of such matters, but this particular case of not long ago with reports stacks high would tend to prove that something did occurr in the South Bronx. It can not have been manufactured out of thin air. I don't know how, why or even if possession can take root in a human being! What I do believe is that EVIL exists beyond the evil that man himself creates.
