    Dial M for Murder

ALL WE HAVE IS STINKERS CALLED FILMS at this time of the year. Last night was our little group's film night but I took a pass as nothing is worth seeing.

Which brings me to DIAL M FOR MURDER starring Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings in yet another of his serious roles. I enjoyed the film, but it really shows its age though Hitchcock does his very best with a film that is definitely not one of his best. The problem is that it comes from a stage play and it's almost filmed as a stage play, over 80% of the drama taking place in the confines of a rather lush apartment, but even more limiting in the drawing room, parlour or a study of some sort, as such a room would be called some 60 years ago and even further back. Frankly, I thought the set was terrible as one walks into the apartment and is immediately in said room, no entrance way, no hallway... nothing. It proves again how theatrical this movie is with a ONE BASIC SET that can serve any purpose just as in the theatre. Hitchcock did the same thing in the remarkable ROPE of 1948, (a one room set) but this dandy film is not only a thriller but explores homosexuality on the screen with main actors Farley Granger and John Hall with Jimmy Stewart as a former College Professor with the bent of a SLEUTH. It was a difficult shoot according to Hitch being confined in such a small space, but the results were fabulous.

I'm rather dumbfounded by the reaction to this thriller of C C people. It's not the least bit frightening and all seems like a game the actors are rather enjoying. Definitely Not the best of HITCH! BUT WORSE THAN ANYTHING, ITS THEATRICAL ROOTS ARE ALWAYS BEFORE THE VIEWER, A REAL HINDRANCE as far as I'm concerned.
