    Doubt

Very rare it is that four cast members are nominated for Oscars for the one film. So is the case with DOUBT which should tell you right off that we are dealing with a high piece of film making. DOUBT is based on the PULITZER PRIZE and TONY WINNING DRAMA of the same name. As a Catholic I understand all the ramifications of this suspense filled drama about Nuns and a Parish Priest who don't share common values. I was in a parochial school very much like Saint Nicholas, the Bronx school portrayed in Doubt and let me tell you it was always a suspense filled day for any and every type of reason. Principal Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep) represents the old hierarchy of discipline and running of a school while Father Flynn (Hoffman) represents a more humane, modern approach to education. Young Novice Amy Adams and a school child's mother (Viola Davis) are caught in the middle of a veritable terror filled nightmare of insane events. These personalities become known to us almost as the film opens (except for the Davis character) After certain incidents (NOT REVEALED SO TO NOT SPOIL THE PLOT) come to light OR SEEM TO COME TO LIGHT, the situation in the school and parish become quite frightening to the point of unbearable insanity. There is never any proof of wrongdoing or " sin ", not the slightest bit of proof. The only thing that is certain is that there is DOUBT, DOUBT DOUBT. This movie will shake you to your foundation if you are at all familiar with the old parochial run schools. If you are not Catholic and not familiar with the antiquated parochial school system, the film might not have the impact it should have. I want to stress again that STREEP, HOFFMAN, AMY ADAMS and VIOLA DAVIS give remarkable performances that one rarely gets on the screen with this intensity. This is an impeccable production that retains all its relevance as we never want to experience this type of hell again. This is an original play and screenplay by John Patrick Shanley who also directed the film. Doubt ends in a manner you would never suspect! The film hits so close to home every time I see it.
