    Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

This 1941 version of Jekyll and Hyde was directed by Oscar winning director of Gone with the Wind, Victor Fleming. It's a very good treatment with Spencer Tracy playing the twosome in a more psychological, diabolical way unlike the performance that won Frederic March an Oscar back in the thirties, a performance that concentrated on physical changes of the worst kind. The B + W cinematography is absolutely luscious, something I would always need in the telling of this tale. It adds so much to the whole ambiance of the piece. And WOW... the two leading ladies, 21 year old Lana Turner and 26 year old Ingrid Bergman are PURE GOLD! The best version of the Robert Louis Stevenson story. By the way, of significant note is that STEVENSON was one of the screen writers for his own novella. MGM could afford and was powerful enough during the Studio System to get the greatest artists in every department of film making.
