Wow was this movie not what I expected. I went in thinking it was going to be your standard car chase action movie and boy was I wrong. There is very little car action (especially for a movie titled Drive) and the film really doesn't get going till about halfway through. During some of the slower scenes with Mulligan I did find myself wishing the film would get going but once it does, shocking is one word I'd use to describe it. The violence is extreme (stabbings, shootings, faces being literally stomped to death sound effects and all) I was very surprised at just how violent it was, especially considering the minimalist approach to most of the scenes that came before. Gosling, while barely uttering a word, is terrific as usual. His quick transformation from a quiet and subdued loner to a vicious remorseless killer is something to see and he is helped a great deal by Cranston, Pearlman, and Brooks, giving his best performance in years. Was it what I was expecting? Certainly not. Would I have preferred if it were closer to the kind of film I was expecting? Probably. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely.
