This is less of a conventional thriller a la Hitchcock, rather; it is more of a philosophical exercise that is perplexing in the final analysis. We are sent into a tailspin at the get-go with a puzzling scene in a stylized strip-club involving spiders and high heels (!) The story becomes more incomprehensible as it proceeds. This film is mostly for highbrows who might wish to debate its meaning, ie, is the protagonist hallucinating, dreaming, or facing another incarnation of his being? Adding to the confusion is a mindbend of an ending! This is not for all tastes. Some people left the theatre. This film does nothing to further the careers of the director or Mr. Gyllenhaal or that of the lovely Melanie Laurent.
