    Flowers in the Attic

Flowers in the Attic from the 1979 novel was an insane best seller much like the Twilight books were some 10 years ago. It was important that producers get everything of importance on the screen as they wanted the millions upon millions of fans and former readers to be viewing the adaptation. For me the most intriguing character is easily the grandmother played in a 'bravura' performance by the brilliant Oscar and Tony Winner ELLEN BURSTEYN. This is a mean, no a very cruel old lady; a creepy, bible thumping control freak of ego-maniacal proportions who grew amongst 'privilege' and status with obviously no love or care. Miss Bursteyn received Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award Nominations for this very juicy role. She scared me... so was she in character!!!

Flowers is a gothic story that at its core deals with family dysfunction passed from one generation to the next. It all takes place in a beautiful old mansion, specifically in the ATTIC during the late fifties. The exact year given is 1958, but time is of no importance in this tale as we really see nothing of the outside world. Therefore it becomes a timeless and universal piece. The story is told from the point of view of the thirteen year old girl. What all starts up in sunshine becomes a very dark, gloomy piece with edgy, unusual, controversial themes that range from corporal punishment, psychological abuse to incest which seems to be treated in a very casual way. I would not want my teens watching this film, that is if I had teen children. At the best of times Flowers is a disturbing film. I resisted getting pulled into this sordid tale for it is one that can consume you and not leave a trace.
