    From Here to Eternity

What an enormously great and powerful film from Fred Zinneman which won the Oscar as Best Motion Picture and also Best Director plus a whole slew of other Oscars. It is all framed within the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, but the extremely varied complication of characters and couples and their eventual inter-personal relationships makes for a motion picture of unparalleled greatness. The amazing beach scene with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr has become iconic and used since in so many motion pictures. Both Donna Reed and Frank Sinatra won Oscars, Frank's win putting him on top of the world till he died at 80, 20 years ago. Burt and Deborah were also Oscar Bound as BEST LEAD ACTORS of the film as was MONTGOMERY CLIFT who falls for a "hostess" at the base. He gives a performance that will break your heart. When he is on screen, it's simply impossible to take one's eyes off him. His TAPS performance in ETERNITY is full of such pathos and suffering that it has remained one of the tremendous moments of this miraculous film. This feature is not only grandiose in the best sense of the word but of such importance in in evolution of film. Imagine! Every major and supporting Actor nominated for for an Oscar in the same film, with 2 ultimate winners., a screen play that is one of the best in all of motion pictures, direction by Zinneman that is literally perfection. AGAIN, look for Ernest Borgnine as one of the nastiest, ugliest, barbaric, men of screen history. Two years later he would win his own Oscar as the shy, wonderful mamma's boy MARTY! THIS CAN'T BE MISSED. IT WOULD BE SINFUL!
