    Gaslight

The film was made in 1944 by the super amazing director George Cukor. I first discovered it on Turner but have since viewed it multiple times. It yet remains a handful of films I love, a film I can watch over and over, still making a very profound impression on me. GASLIGHT is one great dramatic film and a perfect thriller, too boot, aided enormously by the superb direction of CUKOR, a luminous, haunting performance by Oscar Winner Ingrid Bergman, this first Oscar for Gaslight. Charles Boyer, usually congenial or sincere, playing her sociopath of a husband and, by George, he comes off as the personification of evil itself in his Oscar nominated performance. 18 year old Angela Lansbury received her first Oscar nomination for Gaslight. As if this were not enough, we have the great Joseph Cotton, a Police Agent who seems to have more than a grasp as to what is happening in the Anton (Boyer) household. Then the great Dame Mae Whitty provides some relief from the unspeakable horrors perpetrated by this devil of a husband. One can't state much of the plot for fear of spoiling it for any potential viewers. The fact we're in late 19th century London, fog, grime and all greatly adds to the Victorian ambiance which, in turn, deeply enhances this mysterious work. The black and white cinematography is gorgeous; the script could not be better. Be prepared for anything at all times as everything is like a ticking bomb! As for the finale with its torturous suspense and multiple twists, just hold on to your hats! I will add one teaser which is mentioned just for a minute or so as the film begins: It's all in an opulent evening gown once worn by a famous opera singer, the aunt of Paula, the Ingrid Bergman character. GASLIGHT is PERFECTION in every detail. By the way, there is an English version of GASLIGHT (Angel Street was the name of the original stage play) made in 1940. I've never had the luck to see it, but I doubt it can hold a candle to the 1944 Hollywood version, the reason it has, in all likelihood, gone into obscurity. As old as the film is, it holds up so well. I would urge film lovers to see it at all costs. You won't be a bit sorry. Take a break from the superabundance of junk out there.
