Before Ian McKellan became a household name as Magneto, Gandalf etc. he starred as James Whale, the gay film director behind Frankenstein, Freaks and many more hits before calling it quits pretty early on in his career. Ian gives an absolutely stunning performance, one of the very best THAT DID NOT WIN THE OSCAR (1998), We all know what happened that year... a film called LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL which garnered Roberto Benigni a SURPRISE OSCAR as Best Lead Oscar Actor. Brendan Fraser as a hunk gardener is very good and the late, Lynn Redgrave as Whales's trusty housekeeper was outstanding and should have won the Oscar in 1998 instead of Judi Dench for her mere 10 minutes in Shakespeare in love which was not that much of a big deal to win an Oscar.
