Well, having seen many of the original Godzilla movies, I'll say that this one does a great job recreating the feel and pace of those movies. I thought the first half of the story was fantastic, Brian Cranston was amazing, but then it nose-dives and we're left trying to figure out who the main character, and the hero, is. The special effects were mostly fantastic and represented exactly the original, yet still added a modern feel. I don't recall seeing anyone actually die; lots of death, but it was always a boat of people, or something in the distance, never a death or anything of substance up close, so you never get the feeling that anyone is in danger of anything. I thought parts were absolutely brilliant, while others were sad, cheesy, annoying formulaic Hollywood scenes meant to fill in gaps and holes in character development. It had the potential to be an all-time classic movie that would stand the test of time; however, the director, the studios, whomever, didn't have the courage, or the skill, to move outside the cookie-cutter formula of Hollywood and take a chance that audiences are more intelligent than are given credit for, and have a desire for something truly original. While watching Godzilla, I'm reminded of: War of the Worlds, Independence Day, Star Wars I, II, III, and The Crystal Skull; all movies that have adventure and excitement, but fail to deliver a main character, or any sense of realism and tension. If this movie had been more like Sky-captain and the World of Tomorrow, or Sin City where the entire movie has the same feel and tone throughout, and the courage to be unique, then I feel like it would have been one of the all-time greats, but, as it stands, it's just another Hollywood blockbuster.
