    Goya's Ghosts

The title of the film, Les Fantômes de Goya about the great Spanish painter Francisco Goya is a bit misleading. What we see is Goya's involvement in the re-instituted Spanish Inquisition due to the French Revolution, the crackdown of the Catholic Church, and on a personal note, the loss of his little muse. The historical period of 1792, three years following the revolution is fascinating. However, the film is hardly dealing with a portrait of Goya which I believe most expected. We get several perspectives of Spanish history with the Catholic Church and her priests making the biggest impression. The period piece looks quite fascinating, but I'm not sure the film knew exactly what direction it wanted to take!
