    Grand Hotel

A"knock-out" film of great MGM Stars from 1932. So What! The Grand Hotel formula was this all-star cast of unrelated characters in a common environment that was later used in many other films. I've seen this film 3 times and I consider Greta Garbo's work and the work of the supposedly great John Barrymore some of the worst film acting in history. It's impossible to take them seriously! Lionel Barrymore as a dying man out for a good time can really get on your nerves and Joan Crawford as the stenographer who wants to get to the top fairs some what better. GRAND HOTEL was nominated for 1 Academy Award in the best picture category and it WON making it the only BEST PICTURE OF ANY YEAR TO WIN only one OSCAR! The other picture nominees of 1932 were a sad lot, but my vote would have gone to THE CHAMP with WALLACE BEERY and JACKIE COOPER in the legendary boxing film. Wallace Beery, incidentally won an Oscar for THE CHAMP in the only MALE tie in Academy history... the other winner being Frederic March for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Grand Hotel was supposed to be a prestige film. God, it is hopelessly dated!
