In a Middle Earth Experience Hard to be God is a difficult film to totally grasp as it has indeed a lot on its plate, almost impossible to describe fully, a film for which one has to be totally prepared or it simply can be too much for the viewer. It can seem strangely familiar to notions of our world in a sense but some ultra-essentials are indeed missing. If one can state that almost everything is negative and of a base ugliness, that should be readily understood. But don't be so ready to accept my statement as gospel truth. The key elements of this film are anything but facile. Is it possible to come to some conclusion regarding even bare bones ideas the film is trying to express? This is all very puzzling. I certainly can't say I understood this bizarre film on a level "we might call total reality." It's all absurdly profound and much too powerful a film to absorb its true meaning in one sitting! I can't make up my mind how to rate it. It's a shattering, bender type film. Like the other reviewers, I would ask you to take note of the final words of that child as the film is concluding! I have no idea of what it is supposed to all mean. If you plan to see it: "I say beware!" Rarely is a film familiar on one hand yet so obscure, out of this world on the other. I can't give this film higher than a 7 as it would be absurd. I was not able to fully comprehend the total enigma.
