    Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison

This is a golden oldie from 1957 with 2 superstars who give performances that are brilliant, especially Miss Kerr who earned her 5th Oscar Nomination playing the nun opposite the American Marine of Robert Mitchum. It is WW II and the Japanese are literally everywhere in the Pacific. Don't let the one locale lull you into imagining you are in for a dull film. Though much has to be clandestine, the viewer is in for a thrilling ride not least is the idea of a nun stranded on an island with a solitary man. From accounts one reads, Miss Kerr was the Oscar front runner as she had already taken a few prizes including the prestigious N. Y. Film Critics Award. Unfortunately, circumstance always played against Miss Kerr's Oscar chances. In 1957, Joanne Woodward literally came out of no where, the least likely to win, to capture the Oscar for a defining moment in film with THE THREE FACES OF EVE. In 1960, Miss Kerr had literally taken all the awards for her film THE SUNDOWNERS in which she starred yet again with Robert Mitchum. This was the year Liz Taylor almost died from a throat operation. To no surprise LIZ was given the Oscar for BUTTERFIELD 8, a film Liz has said was one of her worst performances. Luckily Miss Kerr was given a Special Oscar for her great body of work which started in the 1940's some 10 years before she passed. Now that was worth seeing on the Oscars. Kiss Kerr had been ill for some time and was barely recognizable from her great screen roles. She was a magnificent actor of both film and stage work. + Thank God for DVD. To see her vast array of roles is truly a privilege.
