    Hondo

HONDO is a rather bizarre John Wayne western from 1953, not that it is at all bad, but simply different from the dozens upon dozens of westerns he made. Some of the usual retinue of Wayne is again present in this film such as Ward Bond. But what makes this John Farrow western (father of Mia Farrow) truly special is that it is the first feature role of the enormous talent of GERALDINE PAGE who receive an Oscar Nomination for this first performance. She didn't win but went on to amass 8 Oscar Nominations finally winning in the late 80's for "The Trip To Bountiful" by Horton Foote just two years before dying of an apparent heart attack in her early 60's. The film deals with a woman who is isolated in the Western Frontier and a Westerner who takes to her. I greatly admire Geraldine Page and seeing her FIRST film role flabbergasted me as to her rare gift of performing so well before a camera.
