In her directorial debut, VALERIA GOLINO, most famous for starring in Rain Man with Dustin Foffman and Tom Cruise, takes on a topic of great controversy, assisted suicide. In this film, MIELE ( HONEY ), is the undercover name of a former 2 year medical student working with a clandestine head of the operation. When she's sent to a would be client, Grimaldi, her whole world and viewpoints are at odds. At Cannes it was hailed as a very powerful drama. The subject matter is certainly a deadly serious one, pardon the pun, but I didn't much care for the film which seemed more like a series of vignettes, not particularly well shot and disjointed at times perhaps due to the editing or these very short scenes that suddenly jump to something altogether different. It's a bold move on Golino's part, but I was not too taken with this recent Italian film.
