    House of Wax

What a great experience to see what was perhaps the first major film in 3D. This newly restored version of the Warner Brothers classic (1953) is actually a re-make of the 1933 Warner Brothers MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM. André de Toth created a cult favourite with the 1953 version in which sculptor Vincent Price achieves realism for his wax museum in a horrific, formidable way. Though a bit on the "iffy side" for 2015, the film can still be enjoyed as Warners went all out to create an astoundingly good looking motion picture. Rare chance to see the very young Phyllis Kirk and Carolyn Jones in the very early stages of their careers.

The real bonus on this restored version comes in the form of the 1933 original film from which House of Wax, 1953, derives its inspiration. Technically, the Michael Curtiz (Oscar winner for Casablanca) thirties version stands out for its boldness and daring, shot in a chillingly effective early two colour Technicolour process. It's amazing to view a film I never knew existed. A real treat was to see Lionel Atwill in the Vincent Price role with Fay Wray (King Kong) and Glenda Farrell as the female protagonists. OMG! This original Wax Museum is 82 years young! Pretty unbelievable!

It's a duo (1933 and 1953) that true cinéphiles will not want to miss. For those with a technical bent for present or past films, this combination is indispensable!
