Everything is right about this movie. The story is compelling and Scorsese brought out that as well as wonder, awe and magic. As I watched Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz, I had a difficult time thinking of them as children. Their performances were, though they were portraying children, very mature. Another score for Scorsese to get these actors to turn in such fine performances. It was a pleasure to watch a movie that didn't have to rely on dollops of rude language, violence or sex to keep the audience interested. (Not that I am offended by any of those but sometimes, directors don't know how to use the elements appropriately) What we have here instead is a compelling story that is respectively and beautifully brought to the screen. It evokes mystery and awe in the audience. Not the mystery and awe romantics think childhood is about but the mystery and awe of emotions.
