I am an incurable operaphile and lecture on opera of all nationalities world wide. I must say that I am not the biggest Mozart fan yet I could never deny he writes some of the most beautiful, passionate arias or what we call ' arie buffe' ( comic arias.) This Don Giovanni treatment irritated me to such an extent I almost walked out... something I would never do with any opera, no matter how poorly presented. I don't particularly mind if a director takes liberties with a libretto as long as it remains truthful to the original written word... in this case the brilliant authorship of that rogue Lorenzo da Ponte who taught at Columbia in N. Y. when he escaped to the new world to avoid his insurmountable debts. Don Giovanni is extremely challenging to sing and a good deal of the times IT FAILS even with the most brilliant of casts. This is not, by any means, a good cast and some of my favourite airs left much to be desired. I hated this particular production! I've seen this opera at least 10 times so I was very under-whelmed, to say the least.
