    Insomnia

Insomnia is Christopher Nolan's 3rd film. Where I will admit it hasn't got the power and sheer imagination of MEMENTO, filled with themes of memory, an almost amnesia and mind game, it has become a movie of very great stature. His third film Insomnia, is good but one which most failed to understand completely as Nolan still dwells on themes of remembering, fact from fiction, the non-reliance memory. It's génial how Chris Nolan pits Detective Will Domar (Al Pacino) against comedic superstar Robin Williams who is so dark and menacing in this film. Mr. Williams is incredibly gifted in dramatic roles of which he has done so many. Hillary Swank plays a supporting role as a good detective. Detective Will Domar of the LAPD is sent to Alaska to investigate a murder. Sleep deprived by a shining midnight sun, problems begin just soon after the film opens so nothing is given away. Soon the Chris Nolan ideas start to factor in! MOST VIEWERS NOT KNOWING THE YOUNG CHRIS NOLAN, ESPECIALLY IF THEY MISSED MEMENTO, start to get lost and miss the whole point of the movie. THUS THE LOW RATINGS. I was a bit in the dark with Insomnia at the cinéma, not knowing, like most, the Nolan technique. It all becomes cloudy, a bit hard to follow wondering about the Inspector's consciousness and its stability. It's all part and parcel of Nolan's game as stated above. The viewer has to decipher the entire murky situation. It's not a straightforward police investigation that solves a murder. There's more to the proceedings! It's difficult to play in the early Nolan films as everything is hardly on just one level. It's just as hard on the audience. There is too much brain power required to make sense of the whole thing. As stated earlier, that's why most dismissed the film and rated it very low. It's a shame because unlike most direct murder investigations, this film requires you not only to focus strongly, thus making sense of any illusion vs. Reality, but all told, it is very different in almost every respect from a crime investigation.
