This D. W. Griffith meaty, long masterpiece from 1916 has to easily count as one of the greatest screen achievements though made 99 years ago. I have no idea who the art and set decorators were, but they accomplished the near impossible. I doubt any art director or set decorator of today could improve on what was done in Intolerance. Griffith methodically tries to make us understand the theme of intolerance through several ages. Most periods should be recognized by any adult equipped with even half a brain, but don't worry if your historical skills are poor. If interested in great silent film, just throw yourself into this 'opus magnus' and let it wash over you. INTOLERANCE had some difficulty finding a wide audience back in 1916. Presumably because of its enormous length. Even if you can watch half the film it will open your eyes to the genius of director D. W.
